Mustangs 'Blow Out' Hurricanes

Dundee Hurricanes 26 - 50 Doncaster Mustangs

The Mustangs travelled North of the Border for a pivotal game in their season last Sunday know that nothing less than a victory would do in their battle to reach the playoffs. At 2-4 going into the game they knew that a loss would all but end their hopes of post season action in 2010.

After a cautious start by both teams it was the visitors who got on the scoreboard first when QB Ian McCartney found the ever dependable Paul Oates in the endzone for a 3 yard touchdown. The extra point failed leaving the score 6-0. But back came Dundee to level the score following a 12 yard TD pass.

It was Oates again who extended the Mustangs lead in the second period with another pass from McCartney, this time from 11 yards out. This time, Paul Weston added the 2 extra points to stretch the lead to 14-6. But again the home team came back when Mahammadou Niakate hauled in a 65 yard TD pass to bring the score back to 14-12. However it was the Mustangs that then stepped on the gas to open up a 24 point lead by half time. McCartney hit Dayne Robinson from 37 yards and Martyn Lee from 74 yards out before adding another score with a jinking 42 yard run to leave the Hurricanes shellshocked and trailing 36-12 at the interval.

Niakate took it upon himself to keep Dundee in the contest in the third quarter as the two teams traded scores. He scored on runs of 30 and 52 yards to singlehandedly keep the home side in touch. But sandwiched in between,  match MVP McCartney added his second score of the day from 3 yards out to keep the Mustangs just out of reach of the home side. The quarter ended with Doncaster in front by 44-26.

With the Mustangs defence now taking control of the Hurricanes attack, the fourth quarter saw back up QB Liam Kilvington enter the game and the Mustangs proceeded to run the clock down with the ground game. Midway through the final period, Kilving engineered a drive that saw Alan Biddleston out pace the home defence for a 41 yard TD run. However the score was called back for a  holding penalty at the line of scrimmage. However, not to be denied, Jeremiah Jordan added the final points of the game with a 27 yard run to leave the Mustangs convincing winners by 50-26.

The Mustangs take a well earned break beofre their next game on August 1st against the Yorkshire Rams in Leeds
